Frequently Asked Questions About the St Lucia Learning Project

Who are the volunteers of the St. Lucia Learning Project?

• Self-supporting Canadian volunteers committed to coming alongside a special group of children and the adults of influence in their lives
• Adults from 18 to ? who are in good physical health
• People with a desire to reach out to others with caring and compassion and the motivation to serve others before self
• Those with a sense of adventure, a sense of humour, flexibility, and the ability to work  and live as part of a team

Do I need to be a teacher?

• No!  If you will sit and read to a child in your lap or hold up a child who is learning to swim you'll fit right in.  If you can see yourself helping a child's hand to write down their thoughts or encouraging a struggling child with a hug and a smile, you'll fit right in.

Do I need any special talents or skills?

• No!  While we love to have volunteers with special gifts and talents to lead parts of the program, we also need others who are willing to help implement the activities and offer support to the team and the children.
How long must a volunteer be willing to spend in St. Lucia?
• The minimum commitment is 2 weeks but many volunteers spend longer.  It is important to give yourself and the campers time to establish a relationship.  The longer you can stay the more everyone benefits, including you.

How do volunteers cover their costs?

• Some volunteers are able to pay all their own expenses.  Others are able to fundraise all or part of the monies needed in very creative ways.  Still others get partial or complete support from their church community, service clubs, family and friends.

What is the next step?
• Contact Michelle Anderson at 905-829-0396 or email her at auntieshel124@gmail.com .  She will arrange to meet with you and provide you with the application that must be completed by all volunteers in order to be considered.
